Coverage always depends on your individual plan and eligibility, so your benefits are confirmed before your first session rather than assumed from the insurer name.
How therapy benefits generally work
Most plans handle outpatient therapy through a behavioral health benefit. When a therapist is in-network with your plan, you usually pay a set copay per session, or a percentage of the session fee as coinsurance. Some plans apply a deductible first, meaning you pay the full contracted rate until that deductible is met.
Being in-network with an insurer does not mean every plan under that insurer is covered. Employer plans, marketplace plans, HMO and PPO products, and out-of-state plans can all behave differently. Nothing here promises a specific copay or guarantees coverage of your particular plan — your insurer determines your benefits, and coverage is confirmed before your first session.
If your plan isn't in-network, self-pay is $150 per session and monthly superbills are available for possible out-of-network reimbursement. The cost of therapy in Austin page breaks down fees, superbills, and HSA/FSA use in more detail.
How to verify your benefits
- Call the member services number on the back of your insurance card.
- Ask whether outpatient mental health therapy is covered under your plan.
- Ask for your copay or coinsurance per session, and whether a deductible applies.
- Ask whether telehealth sessions are covered the same as in-person sessions.
- Bring what you learn to a free 15-minute consultation and we'll sort out the rest together.

FAQ
Common questions
Which insurance plans are accepted for therapy in Austin?
Haven & Harbor bills insurance through Headway, and Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Cigna/Evernorth are the plans clients ask about most. Networks vary plan by plan, so coverage is always confirmed for your specific plan before your first session.
How do therapy insurance benefits usually work?
With an in-network plan you typically pay a copay or coinsurance per session, and some plans require you to meet a deductible first. Your insurer sets those amounts, not the practice.
What if my plan isn't in-network?
Self-pay is $150 per session. A monthly superbill can be provided so you can seek out-of-network reimbursement if your plan offers those benefits.
How do I verify my therapy benefits?
Call the member services number on your insurance card and ask whether outpatient mental health is covered, what your copay or coinsurance is, whether a deductible applies, and whether telehealth is covered the same as in-person.
Is the consultation free?
Yes. The initial 15-minute consultation is free and does not use your insurance benefits.
